Starting with DE-CIX Madrid, DE-CIX became active in developing the digital ecosystem on the Iberian Peninsula. And with DE-CIX Lisbon, we will open the second Internet Exchange on the Iberian Peninsula. The Iberian Peninsula is the new center of gravity where networks meet instead of going all the way further north to reach European networks and international content providers. This saves costs, reduces latency, and improves the network quality.
Connecting in Lisbon instead of London saves transport and colocation costs and massively reduces latency. Bypassing London spares networks at least 30 milliseconds round-trip time (RTT).
DE-CIX Lisbon will be ready for service at the end of Q4 2018, and we will start taking orders in January 2019.
Madrid and Lisbon will be interconnected from day one
Our new exchange in Lisbon and DE-CIX Madrid, still the fastest-growing Internet Exchange worldwide, will be connected from day one. All networks that will connect in Lisbon can automatically peer with all networks connected in Madrid, which means they can peer with currently close to 130 networks.
With this interconnection, DE-CIX Lisbon does not have to start from scratch with just a few networks like DE-CIX Madrid once had to do, but instead, DE-CIX Lisbon offers peering opportunities with more than hundred networks right from the start.
Twin exchanges to massively grow the interconnection ecosystem
Together, both exchanges will help the digital ecosystem on the Iberian Penisula to grow. DE-CIX Lisbon, as the sea cable hub close to the shore, and DE-CIX Madrid, as center of the Iberian Peninsula, will be the perfect twin exchanges to boost the interconnection ecosystem, and the Iberian Peninsula will further strengthen its position as the new center of gravity for traffic coming from Western Africa and South America into Europe.
