DE-CIX introduces Route Aggregation for Cloud ROUTER to boost multicloud scalability

Daimler Truck case study

DE-CIX has introduced Route Aggregation and Static Routes for its Cloud ROUTER service, giving enterprises greater control over how routes are advertised across their cloud environments. The new feature helps customers stay within cloud provider prefix limits, reduce routing complexity and ensure stable BGP sessions.

Smarter routing for multicloud setups

Cloud providers such as AWS and Azure often restrict the number of prefixes they accept. When these limits are exceeded, BGP sessions can become unstable. With Route Aggregation, Cloud ROUTER customers can aggregate multiple more specific prefixes into a aggregated less specific routes, reducing the number of advertised routes while maintaining the same consistent routing behavoir.

Benefits for Cloud ROUTER users

  • Stay within cloud provider prefix limits and avoid BGP session resets
  • Reduce routing table size by advertising only aggregated prefixes
  • Maintain granular internal routing while controlling external visibility
  • Establish connectivity for non BGP speakers and aggregated routes for Cloud ROUTER easily via the DE-CIX Portal or API

How it works

Customers can define Static Routes within their Cloud ROUTER and create Aggregate Routes that represent a group of more specific prefixes. These aggregated routes are automatically propagated to relevant connections. Combined with routing policies and prefix lists, they ensure that only the intended summarized routes are advertised externally.
