New Internet Exchange in São Paulo: DE-CIX starts offering interconnection services distributed across three data centers

The first 20 networks are already being onboarded. With the infrastructure, they will be able to connect directly with various cloud, content and Internet service providers (ISPs), facilitating and increasing the speed of national and international data traffic with more than 100 countries.

São Paulo (Brazil). DE-CIX, the world's leading operator of Internet Exchanges (IXs), or data traffic exchange points, is starting to operate its peering and interconnection services in São Paulo. The new Internet Exchange, DE-CIX Sao Paulo, is distributed across three data centers: Equinix SP4, Elea SPO1 and Ascenty SP4. The company is already onboarding the first 20 customers in the region, including TBC Azion Technologies.

With the start of operations, companies now have access not only to local peering or network interconnection, but also remote peering, as well as cloud exchange and multi-cloud routing functionalities. Companies can gain direct and private access to cloud providers both locally and remotely, and ensure seamless cloud-to-cloud communication, facilitating their digital business with low latency and high-performance connectivity. In addition, by joining the exchange, companies can connect directly to thousands of network operators (carriers), Internet service providers (ISPs), cloud and content providers, and corporate networks from more than 100 countries worldwide.

"With our high-performance, secure, and scalable interconnection services, we enhance local interconnection, creating a more resilient and globally integrated interconnection ecosystem in São Paulo. Being a part of the global DE-CIX ecosystem offers the potential of an enormous diversity of networks now accessible in the city. The growing digital economy in Brazil requires state-of-the-art connectivity, ensuring that data exchange takes place fast, efficiently, and securely, as local as possible, and as global as necessary. The new IX opens up a complementary offering that further enriches the country as the second largest market in the world in terms of number of networks," says Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE-CIX.

The new Internet Exchange is integrated into DE-CIX’s global ecosystem through connections to IXs in New York, Lisbon, Madrid and Frankfurt – the largest IX in Europe. The connectivity takes advantage of several transatlantic routes via the Atlantic South-North and South-South connectivity corridors. This will allow connected Brazilian networks to reach thousands of local, regional and international networks that together form the largest interconnection ecosystem in the world.

Rafael Umann, CEO of Azion, comments: "Azion operates one of the most distributed and advanced infrastructures in the world, with a presence in over 100 data centers. Our platform ensures resilience, security, and performance for critical and AI workloads. Through interconnection with DE-CIX, we guarantee our customers access to the best infrastructure on the market and further expand our global network to deliver low latency and high availability to our clients, regardless of user location."

Increasing national competitiveness

The arrival of DE-CIX São Paulo (SAO) increases national competitiveness as it expands the options for network operators in Brazil. In addition, it fills a vacuum in the Brazilian market with its range of neutral, enterprise-level interconnection solutions backed by SLA (Service Level Agreement: a formal contract between a service provider and a customer, which defines the service standards that will be delivered and the consequences if they are not fulfilled).

With 165 million Internet users and more than 10,000 networks, Brazil represents a great opportunity for the company to contribute to the digital transformation. The German company chose São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro to install its IXs interconnection points in the country due to strategic partnerships with data center operators in these cities. With this milestone, South America becomes the company's fifth continent of operation.

World's largest IX operator

DE-CIX offers its interconnection services in around 60 locations in Europe, Africa, North and South America, the Middle East and Asia. Accessible from data centers in more than 600 cities around the world, DE-CIX interconnects thousands of network operators (carriers), Internet service providers (ISPs), content providers and corporate networks in more than 100 countries and offers peering, cloud and other interconnection services.

Founded in 1995, the company has just celebrated its 30th anniversary. DE-CIX in Frankfurt, Germany, is one of the world's largest Internet Exchanges, with a data volume of almost 45 Exabytes per year (as of 2024) and around 1,100 connected networks.

Around 250 employees from more than 35 different nations form the basis of DE-CIX's success story in Germany and around the world. Since the dawn of the commercial Internet, DE-CIX has had a decisive influence - in a number of leading global bodies such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) - in co-defining guiding principles for the Internet of the present and the future. “As an operator of critical IT infrastructure, DE-CIX has a great responsibility for the seamless, fast and secure exchange of data between people, companies and organizations at their locations around the world,” concludes DE-CIX's CEO.
