Dubai based Internet Exchange UAE-IX hits 1 Tbit/s traffic peak

UAE-IX, the leading neutral Internet Exchange (IX) in the Gulf region, has reached a historic milestone. On September 4, 2025, the IX recorded a data throughput of 1 Terabit per second (Tbit/s) for the first time in its 13-year history. This new peak marks a significant moment for digital infrastructure in the Middle East, reflecting the region’s accelerating demand for high-performance connectivity.

Connecting continents through Dubai

Launched in 2012 by Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (EITC) with support from the UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), UAE-IX has evolved into a critical interconnection hub between Europe, Africa, and Asia. Managed in partnership with DE-CIX, the global Internet Exchange operator, UAE-IX offers a fully redundant switching platform housed in a world-class secure data center in Dubai. The platform’s strategic location and robust infrastructure continue to attract international carriers, cloud providers, and enterprises seeking low-latency, high-capacity connectivity.

What is a Terabit per second? And how much is 1 Tbit/s?

A Terabit per second (Tbit/s) is a unit of data transmission speed equal to 1,000 Gigabits per second (Gbit/s).

  • 1 Tbit/s = 1,000 Gbit/s = 1,000,000 Megabits per second (Mbit/s)
  • This throughput supports approximately 560,000 simultaneous TikTok video streams or 40,000 concurrent 4K video streams, assuming each stream requires about 25 Mbit/s.
