New study: The digital capital Frankfurt

Frankfurt the digital capital study

In an era where digital infrastructure is the backbone of global economies, Frankfurt has emerged as the world’s top digital capital. On DE-CIX's 30th anniversary, our new study by the Dstream Group examines how Internet Exchanges are a success factor for digital ecosystems and economies. The study explores how the city transformed from a financial hub into the most interconnected digital ecosystem on the planet.

What makes a digital capital?

A digital capital is more than just a city with fast Internet. It’s a convergence point for data, talent, and technology – a place where networks, data centers, cloud providers, and innovation intersect. Frankfurt leads the global ranking thanks to:

  • 20 Internet Exchanges (IXs)
  • 2,500 unique networks (ASNs) connected – the highest globally
  • Over 100 densely interconnected data centers
  • DE-CIX Frankfurt, one of largest IXs worldwide by traffic and connected networks

The role of DE-CIX

Founded in 1995, DE-CIX has been instrumental in Frankfurt’s rise. What began as a local initiative to reduce transit costs has become a global interconnection powerhouse. DE-CIX is now present in 60 markets worldwide, but Frankfurt remains its crown jewel, handling over 45 exabytes of data annually.

Frankfurt’s Internet infrastructure is a key focus of this study, as it plays a crucial role in positioning the city as a digital capital, and the success is built on five pillars:

  • World-class Internet infrastructure
  • Favourable regulatory environment
  • Access to capital and investment
  • A thriving talent pool and academic institutions
  • Presence of global businesses and innovation clusters

The city’s strategic location, robust transport and logistics networks, and commitment to sustainability further enhance its appeal.

A blueprint for the future of connectivity

Frankfurt’s journey from a financial center to a digital powerhouse is a model for cities worldwide. As the demand for low-latency, high-resilience connectivity grows, Frankfurt’s role as the digital crossroads of the world will only become more vital.
