Renumbering at DE-CIX Hamburg

Due to growth in connected networks, we now need to change to a new IPv4 network also in Hamburg. This means that all existing customers will have to change their router’s IPv4 address – and all IPv4 BGP peering sessions. The network change only affects IPv4 addresses; IPv6 addresses do not need to be changed.

The renumbering will take place on 17-19 August

The change will take place over three days between 17 and 19 August 2021. More details will be shared with the DE-CIX Hamburg customers via email. If you have any questions, please contact our Customer Service team.

A new /23 network

We have connected over 200 routers to DE-CIX Hamburg’s peering LAN. As the peering LAN currently uses a /24 network which contains 254 IPv4 addresses, we need to change to a new IPv4 network. Therefore, we have acquired a new address range, a /23 network containing 510 IPv4 addresses for customer routers.

When DE-CIX Hamburg first launched, it was not possible to get such a large network. But, as an Internet Exchange, a critical infrastructure, we are able to get more addresses if we can show that we need them; and with our current growth, we were able to get a new /23 network for Hamburg. The new network however is not adjacent to our current one and we will be getting a completely new /23 network. Therefore, all customers will have to renumber their IPv4 interface connecting to the Hamburg peering LAN.

We have previously done similar upgrades in Dusseldorf, Madrid and just this week, in Munich.
